Biographical Notes & History

Anthony J. Miles

Anthony John Miles (23 April 1955 – 12 November 2001) was an English chess player and the first UK-born over-the-board Grandmaster in history.

Historical Breakthrough

Before 1976, no British-born player had ever achieved the Grandmaster title. Wealthy financier Jim Slater offered a £5,000 bounty to the first British player to earn the title.

Miles achieved his final Grandmaster norm at the Dubna tournament in the Soviet Union in early 1976, claiming both the title and the historic prize. His breakthrough triggered a dramatic surge in British chess, paving the way for the "English Chess Explosion" of the 1980s.

Tournament Career & Karpov Upset

  • World Junior Champion (1974): Won the World Junior Chess Championship in Manila.
  • British Champion (1982): Won the British Championship in Torquay.
  • Defeating the World Champion (1980): At the European Team Championship in Skara, Sweden, Miles played Black against World Champion Anatoly Karpov and famously opened with 1.e4 a6!? (the St. George Defence). Miles outplayed Karpov in a complex strategic battle to win one of the most famous games in British chess history.
  • Tilburg 1985: Suffered severe back spasms during the prestigious Tilburg tournament and played his games lying face-down on a massage table, still finishing tied for first place.

Playing Style and Legacy

Miles was celebrated for his fierce competitive drive, deep endgame technique, and willingness to employ unconventional openings. He passed away prematurely in Birmingham in November 2001 at the age of 46.
